Ethnology (from the Greek ἔθνος, ethnos meaning "nation") is the branch of anthropology that compares and analyses the characteristics of different peoples and the relationship between them (cf. cultural, social, or sociocultural anthropology).

Ethnology is a subject that is interested in the human way of life, people’s everyday life, habits, traditions and beliefs. Event though Ethnology is a diverse subject, there is a common point of departure, namely that our everyday practices (also including material aspects) are characterised by cultural patterns and that these patterns may change through interaction with other people.

Within this discipline, the identifying characteristics of a particular cultural or ethnic group are studied in detail, with an eye toward understanding how each of those elements shape the internal function of that group.
